| Printable Version The biographies for all of the former Commissioners in this section are the official ones they used during their Commission terms. Marcus A. Rowden, who took office January 29, 1975, was a member of the first Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and was named Chairman of the NRC by President Ford on April 21,1976. General Counsel of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) at the time of his appointment to the NRC, Mr. Rowden began his legal career in 1953 as a trial attorney in the civil Division of the Department of Justice. He joined the AEC's Office of the General Counsel in 1958, and served continuously with that office, except for a period 1959 to 1962 when he was Legal Advisor to the U.S. Mission to the European Communities, Brussels, Belgium. Mr. Rowden received the AEC's highest honor–the Distinguished Service Award–in 1972 for his professional advice and counsel to the Commission. He was appointed General Counsel of the AEC in May 1973. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree (economics) in 1950. He received his J.D. degree, with distinction, from the University of Michigan Law School in 1953, where he was a member of the editorial board of the Michigan Law Review. April 1976 |
