Rumina Velshi

Rumina Velshi was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission CNSC) in August 2018, prior to this she was a permanent, part-time Commission member since 2011. Ms. Velshi has a comprehensive background in nuclear energy, with extensive technical, regulatory and adjudication expertise.

Ensuring that the CNSC as the Canadian regulator is ready to respond in an era of innovation and accelerated technological change is a key priority for Ms. Velshi; Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are one such innovation. Preparing to regulate SMRs includes strategies such as the CNSC's pre-licensing design review service for vendors of nuclear technologies.

Ms. Velshi is also an advocate for broad international collaboration in nuclear safety including the harmonization of regulatory requirements. In 2019, the CNSC signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the US NRC to further streamline and improve the regulation of SMRs. She has recently delivered several keynote addresses and participated in a number of events and panels on these issues, both domestically and internationally.

Ms. Velshi holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Civil Engineering), a Master of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) and a Master of Business Administration - all from the University of Toronto.
