THE LICENSEE IS MAKING A PART 21 NOTIFICATION REGARDING DEFECTIVE
RAW WATER PUMP IMPELLERS.
THE LICENSEE IDENTIFIED THAT THE REPLACEMENT IMPELLERS FOR BYRON
JACKSON RAW WATER PUMPS HAD BLADE DIMENSIONS OUT OF TOLERANCE.
AN ENGINEERING EVALUATION OF THE DIMENSIONAL INACCURACIES
DETERMINED THAT PUMP DISCHARGE FLOWS USING THESE IMPELLERS WOULD
NOT SATISFY ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA AND COULD POSE A SUBSTANTIAL
SAFETY HAZARD UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS PROBLEM WAS
INITIALLY IDENTIFIED ON 4/8/97. ONE OF THE IMPELLERS WAS
INSTALLED AND SUBSEQUENTLY REMOVED FROM RAW WATER PUMP
ASSEMBLY
AC-10D WHICH FAILED POST MAINTENANCE TESTING. BOTH DEFECTIVE
IMPELLERS WERE RETURNED TO THE SUPPLIER. THE LICENSEE DOES NOT
KNOW IF OTHER FACILITIES ARE AFFECTED.
THE LICENSEE INFORMED THE NRC RESIDENT INSPECTOR.
