DESCRIPTION:

The use of IPCABLE elements and rigid body elements together in the same model may cause the PERFORM CABLE PRE-STRESS ANALYSIS and the NONLINEAR ANALYSIS commands to abort.

Work Around

If rigid body effects are desired in models that contain IPCABLE elements, use very stiff members or finite elements rather than rigid body elements.

The DEAD LOAD command will abort if a member in the member list has zero length.

Workaround:

Correct the coordinates or incidences of the members which have zero length. The length of the members can be output with the PRINT MEMBER LENGTH command.

DESCRIPTION:

The MOVE OBJECT command will incorrectly compute the length of members as being zero. This error does occurs if the model has been created or modified in GTMENU prior to issuing the MOVE command. The user is informed that the error has occurred as shown in the output below:

MOVE OBJECT 'ROT' ROTATE Z 10.0 ABOUT JOI 1

**** STRUDL ERROR IN.22 - ZERO LENGTH SPECIFIED FOR MEMBER 1 SCAN MODE ENTERED.

The user can issue the PRINT MEMBER LENGTH command to verify that the member's length has been computed to be zero. If the above error message occurs, the user should verify that the length of the member is zero by printing the joint coordinates and computing the length of the member.

Workaround:

If the above error has occurred, the user can go to GTMENU and EDIT JOINT COORDINATES but then CANCEL the editing of the coordinates. The purpose of this is to cause GTMENU to believe that a change has been made to the model so that when then model is translated back to Command Mode, PRINT MEMBER LENGTH will no longer indicate that the members have zero length. The user should then issue the command SCAN OFF before proceeding to perform other computations.

Applicable Sections of the Documentation:

Volume 1 of the GTSTRUDL USER'S MANUAL:

MOVE OBJECT Section 2.1.6.7.4

PRINT MEMBER LENGTH Section 2.1.14.2

DESCRIPTION:

Edge loads on the TRIDIMENSIONAL element IPSQ (20 node solid) will produce incorrect results. The generated loads will be applied in the wrong directions and will not satisfy equilibrium. Users can verify that the results are incorrect by the LIST REACTIONS and LIST SUM REACTIONS commands.

Workaround:

Use the other 20 node TRIDIMENSIONAL element, IPQS, which also has 20 nodes.

DESCRIPTION:

Applicable GT STRUDL Commands:

CREATE LOADING COMBINATION Section 2.1.11.3.4 of Volume 1

LOADING COMBINATION Section 2.1.11.5 of Volume 1

COMBINE Section 2.1.11.6 of Volume 1

Explanation:

In the above loading combination commands, when the loading contribution factor for the last loading ID is not specified, the last loading ID is ignored and no error message is issued.

Applicable GT STRUDL User's Manual:

Volume 1 Section 2.1.11.3.4
Volume 1 Section 2.1.11.5
Volume 1 Section 2.1.11.6

Example:

CREATE LOADING COMBINATIONS 'A' SPECIFICATION 'LL' 0.75 'DL' 0.75 'WL'

In the above loading combination 'A', the factor 0.75 was not specified for the loading 'WL' by mistake. Unfortunately the program did not issue an error message and the loading 'WL' was ignored for the loading combination 'A'. The final components for the loading combination 'A' are the loading 'LL' with the 0.75 contribution factor and the loading 'DL' with the 0.75 contribution factor.

User can verify their loading combination input by issuing the PRINT LOADING DATA command (Section 2.1.14.2 of Volume 1).

DESCRIPTION:

If a member without the specified diagram is first in the member list of an OVERLAY DIAGRAM command, then none of the diagrams produced can be labelled in the CURSOR mode of the Scope Environment and the LABEL OVERLAY command will not label the diagrams.

Workaround:

Specify only those members which have the specified diagrams in the member list. For instance, if a structure has a mixture of space truss and space frame members, specify the OVERLAY DIAGRAM MOM Z MEMBERS list where list contains only the space frame members since the space truss members have only FORCE X results.

Applicable Section of the Documentation:

Volume 3 of the GTSTRUDL USER'S MANUAL:

OVERLAY DIAGRAM Section 2.7.6.8

CURSOR mode Section 2.7.6.13
