2.0 Site Status Summary
On April 15, 1970, NRC authorized GE Hitachi (GEH) to possess but not operate the reactor. The license was renewed on June 11, 1976, and remains in effect under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.51(b). The facility has been maintained in SAFSTOR condition. The facility is next to the Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor currently under active decommissioning. The licensee plans to transition the EVESR facility to active decommissioning and to terminate the license by 2030.
3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues
In 2015, the licensee, GE Hitachi, began a licensing process to exempt the EVESR from the 60-year decommissioning schedule limit of 10 CFR 50.82(a)(3). The exemption request was disapproved by the Commission on August 6, 2021. GEH subsequently withdrew the exemption request by letter dated August 25, 2021. The licensee will begin active decommissioning of the EVESR and plans to terminate the license by 2030.
