Introduction

Decommissioning is the process of removing a facility or safely removing from service and reducing the residual radioactivity to a level that permits release of the property.

Throughout the process, steps are taken to ensure the protection of public health and safety, and the environment. This brochure addresses what types of facilities are regulated, what criteria the NRC uses to regulate decommissioning, who regulates decommissioning activities, how the public can participate in the decommissioning process, and where the public can get more information about the decommissioning program.
