Abstract

The purpose of this test program was to subject cables which had previously undergone accelerated aging equivalent to 50, 60, and 80 years of normal operating life, under five different sets of environmental conditions, to accident irradiation and a LOCA test with the goal to characterize the remaining life of the cables; as such, this test program was not a formal qualification of the cables.

The cables which were tested are representative of cables found in US nuclear power plants. It must be noted that the pre-existing condition of the cables prior to the start of laboratory aging was unknown. The Okonite, Anaconda, and Rockbestos were unused vintage cables but could not be considered ‘new’ as they were manufactured in the 1980’s. The BIW cables were in-service cables from Zion Nuclear Power Station, which operated between 1973 and 1998.

Accident irradiation, LOCA testing, 40x bend testing, and an AC withstand test were performed using the guidelines provided in Regulatory Guide 1.89 Rev. 1 (IEEE Std. 323-1974) and Regulatory Guide 1.211 (IEEE Std. 383-2003).

The details of the test program, a forensic analysis of cable failures, and an independent review of the NIST condition monitoring techniques are included in this report.
