DOE-NRC Workshop on Advanced Non-Light Water Reactors - June 7-8, 2016

The purpose of the workshop was to explore options for increased efficiency, from both a technical and regulatory perspective, for safely developing and deploying advanced non-light water reactors. DOE and NRC staff discussed advanced non-light water nuclear reactor concepts and licensing issues with participants including reactor design vendors, suppliers, electric utilities, academia, national labs, non-government organizations, and other federal agencies. The discussions covered both near- and longer-term opportunities to test and demonstrate new concepts, build non-light water reactors, and enhance appropriate licensing processes and guidance.

The workshop was the second in a series of workshops to allow key stakeholders to share perspectives, reach a common understanding, identify potential challenges, and explore opportunities. The second workshop focused on exchanging information from the various entities (NRC, DOE, industry) on topics such as:

  • Strategies for advanced reactor development and deployment;
  • Recent DOE initiatives;
  • Recent NRC initiatives;
  • Recent industry initiatives; and
  • Advanced non-light water reactor fuel development, qualification, and challenges.
